The Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance on Artificial Optical Radiation (OStrV) and the Technical Rules for the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance on Artificial Optical Radiation (TROS Laser Radiation / Section: General Provisions) specify the requirement to appoint a laser safety officer for the operation of Class 3R, 3B, and 4 laser equipment.

Companies that operate such laser equipment must appoint at least one laser safety officer and formally designate them in writing. Upon designation, the employer assigns the laser safety officer specific tasks, authorities (e.g., to shut down the laser system if defects are detected), and responsibilities regarding protection against laser radiation and the safe operation of the lasers in use. Responsibility for conducting the risk assessment and implementing protective measures remains with the employer. The laser safety officer supports the employer in this area and works closely with the occupational safety specialist and the company physician.
